Best craft beer pubs in Windermere

"The Crafty Baa Windermere" in Windermere, England, is an extraordinary pub and restaurant that has made a name for itself as a unique gathering place in the heart of the Lake District. Established in 2016 by the Vincent family, Lisa and Ben, who previously ran a window cleaning business, the venue transformed a former bookstore into a charming locale that consists of over 80% recycled and reused materials. The pub is famous for its vast selection of craft beers, quirky decor, and a cozy atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists—ideal for a relaxing drink after a day in the mountains or a sociable meal with friends. It was even awarded AA Pub of the Year for England 2018/19, highlighting its special status.

Cozy restaurants in the Lake District

The interior of "Crafty Baa" spans three floors and is a true sensory experience. From the ground floor bar made of old pallet crates to the upper rooms decorated with an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and quirky items like skeletons, antlers, and chandeliers, the pub radiates a distinctive personality. Notably, the so-called "Haunted Room," styled in Victorian decor and featuring creepy details like eerie dolls, creates a special atmosphere. An open fireplace provides warmth on cooler days, while the outdoor terrace adorned with fairy lights offers a nearly magical ambiance on summer evenings. The venue is dog-friendly, featuring its own "house dog" Henry, and is accommodating to families, with children warmly welcomed.

Excellent pub menus in England

The menu focuses on simple yet flavorful dishes that perfectly complement the drinks. A standout item is the Baked Camembert, a creamy, warm cheese served with fresh, homemade bread, ideal for sharing. The charcuterie board is also popular—a selection of high-quality meats served with crunchy vegetable sticks and artisan bread, impressing with its quality. For something hearty, the Reuben sandwich is an excellent choice, filled with pastrami, sauerkraut, and melted cheese, accompanied by a generous portion of chips. The drinks selection is the true centerpiece of the "Crafty Baa": with over 100 different beers—including some of the world’s strongest like Snake Venom at 67.5%—along with a variety of ciders and fine wines, it is a paradise for beer lovers. Regular live music evenings featuring genres like blues, jazz, and soul complete the experience.

Dog-friendly restaurants in England

Service is a crucial factor contributing to the venue's success. The staff are often described as warm, friendly, and helpful, managing to maintain a relaxed atmosphere even during busy times—such as weekends or peak season. However, especially busy days can lead to wait times, and some guests have reported occasional lapses in staff engagement. Many utilize the option to order via an app, ensuring a smooth process, while the owners emphasize making every guest feel welcome—whether through complimentary snacks for kids or water for dogs.

Live music nights in Windermere

Guest opinions are predominantly positive, with the unique atmosphere, impressive beer selection, and delicious food frequently praised. Many appreciate the proximity to the train station, making it a perfect stop after a hike. However, some critical voices occasionally mention a lack of cleanliness—such as sticky tables or floors—and that noise levels can be bothersome when the place is full. Nonetheless, the overall impression is that "Crafty Baa" is a place that stands out for its individuality and character. It has established itself as one of the best spots for craft beer in the Lakes, regularly attracting visitors looking for something special.

A notable aspect of "Crafty Baa" is its backstory and commitment to sustainability. The family built the pub with great attention to detail, giving it a personal and authentic touch. It is also a venue for events, featuring intimate live music nights and an atmosphere reminiscent of Belgian beer cellars. Its central location in Windermere makes it easily accessible and an ideal starting point for an evening in town or a cozy afternoon after an outing.

Totally nutty pub like no other in Windermere with great range of beers and whiskey. It's only tiny but inside and out there is so much to look at ! Worth a visit has it also has the smallest bar too.

Very unique, smallest pub in the Lakes, worth a visit. The dancing lights to the music and the decorations on the ceiling are well entertaining. Spot the stool and the sheep amongst other things in the picture of the ceiling.

What a great friendly pub. Staff are very friendly and attentive and the choice of beers is legendary. I made it my mission to try all the fruit beers .... I managed but my head hurts now haha. Great place with a great atmosphere, highly recommended.

Came here after with the kids seeing the reviews hoping it would be worth it. Tables are dirty and sticky, decor is spooky and scary for the children. There is only one person working behind the bar and service is extremely slow. We asked for 4 plates for the children, they came dirty with food stains. Food is plentiful but sickening. We ordered Margherita pizza and pepperoni pizza - came cold and with so much cheese that after a bite we had to leave it. Chilli dog was tasteless. Pulled pork on fries was cold on top of hard fries. The toilet is filthy. And to top it all off, spent a fortune for poor food!

Truly horrible place - looks filthy, terrible layout and the lady behind the bar was beyond slow and extremely rude. Owners - sort it out or pass it onto to someone who knows what they are doing! Avoid at all costs

Really nice pub, plenty of choice drinks wise, lovely atmosphere and really friendly staff the only thing that let it down was the food, the chips were just frozen shop brought chips, the wrap was lovely though but not the cheapest for both drink and food

Loved it here. I had a snails pale ale 6.2%. Was a little like neck oil but stronger. Plenty choice. Didn't eat here but menu looked tempting.
